A sexy smile and a bleached blonde hairdo. A shirt that shows off her chest. A pretty face all smothered in makeup. A low top and a weight to match. Supposedly, this makes a girl a cutie -- the formula for conventional beauty. It's common for this kind of girl to show her body off to the world, so proud and so convinced that she's better than the girls who aren't conventionally beautiful. She's making sure they know that she is better. She's making sure they feel like they are lesser. But beauty's deeper than the skin and beyond any conventions. A girl who's smart and so profound, the kind who's fun to be around -- she don't know it, but that girl is priceless. As for the life-sized Barbie doll ... if I was her, I would be full of worry. Right now, she gets all of the cheers, but in another seven years I guarantee you'll see her on Van Buren. I realize a weighty fact: There is a face beyond the mask and an unmasked face can be so lovely, so much lovelier than any kind of conventional beauty. The only thing that makes me feel is ugly. The only thing that makes us feel is ugly. Music by Todd Hoover ((C) 2004 Made to Make Music) Words by Todd Hoover and Aaron Matejcik ((C) 2005 Made to Make Music/Temperate Statement Music)

Who I Am 02:36
Well, I shudder when I think about the never-ending sin that occupies the vast majority of who I've been, but who I've been isn't who I am. No, who I've been isn't who I am. Well, I used to take the sins I had and shoved them in my closet, not knowing (the entire time!) that You could see right through it. But that's OK, 'cause I know that you forgive, and I'll try my best not to do it again. And it's funny how I had no idea who I am 'til I found out what You are. Well, I shudder when I think about the never-ending sin that occupies the vast majority of who I've been. But who I've been isn't who I am, and I'll try my best just to keep You close at hand. Once again, I sincerely thought you were the one. And once again, God has intervened to prove me wrong ... at least I think I'm wrong, 'cause how can you be the one if He's not there at all? If He's not there at all? Once again, I feel like these beliefs of mine are occult. And once again, those awful things I keep inside explode (and the shrapnel makes you cry). And I don't know why -- aren't you supposed to be the one, even though He's not there at all? No, he's not there at all. Once again, I thought that I had every pattern figured out forever when -- once again -- I came across a puzzle that I just don't know how to put back together. To think the pieces used to fit so easily ... but now I'm on my knees, trying to bring You here, 'cause now I know she's not the one if You're not there at all. Recycle Bin 04:28
When I speak to you, I promise there will not be a trace of affection; I just wanted you to know that I'm still around if you needed a friend. Maybe one day we will look back on this whole entire situation and laugh about it ... but for now, all there is between you and me is tears. This time, I promise I won't expect you (or anything) to fix it all. No, not at all ... at least I'll try. And this time, I promise I will not let my heart get the best of my head. At least I'll try ... oh, I can't keep any promises, because nothing in the world could cure my heart of its short attention span! And when I try to throw my problems in the trash, they always end up in the recycle bin! Keeping hold of your problems? Let them go and don't try to grab them again. Keeping hold of the past? Just throw it in the trash and not in the recycle bin. When I speak to you, I promise there will not be a trace of affection ... but I can't keep any promises. I seem to be having trouble with my life support. There seems to be a malfunction of some sort. It's giving me way too much air (my lungs are about to burst!), and I'm beginning to question if I need it anymore. 'Cause I remember when it started, your oxygen made me strong; all I wanted to do was inhale you all day long. I inhaled all the affection, I inhaled all the love and I inhaled all the sorrow that I didn't really want. And I wonder: Do I need you anymore or could I start breathing on my own? Yeah, I wonder: Do I need you anymore or should I start breathing on my own? 'Cause I'm suffocating from all of this old bacteria, and asphyxiation is certainly not how I want to die. But I still haven't taken off the mask, only for the fear that there might be some fresh air left in you. Oh, what to do? Oh, what to do? Oh, what to do ... Here's what I'm going to do: I'll give you away to someone else who needs you more than me, somebody who's really suffering from all of the old symptoms that I've since recovered from -- because, as of now, you're just blackening my lungs. I've discovered I don't need you anymore and I can start breathing on my own. Yeah, I've discovered I don't need you anymore and I've started breathing on my own. Yeah, I've discovered that I don't need you anymore! I think it's better this way, and I've got a feeling you're feeling the same. So let us part now before it's too late -- before you break and I asphyxiate. Words and music by Todd Hoover (C) 2005 Made to Make Music

about

The first album of my old band, who became reasonably popular in the Phoenix, Ariz.-based music scene and toured the West Coast in 2006. Thank you so much to everyone who said they were moved in one way or another by these songs, and also to you -- yes, YOU -- for your listening ears.
